As the in-fighting within the ruling Left Unity body continues unabated a third candidate has thrown his hat in the ring from a rival far-left camp the PCS Independent Left. This small group includes supporters and members of the Alliance for Workers Liberty, Communist Party of Great Britain (Weekly Worker) and Red Flag/Workers Power. Alongside some independent left-leaning socialists one or two anarchist types seemed to have integrated into the group.
Whilst there has been no announcement as yet on the Independent Left's own website, the AWL's newspaper announces:
The leadership faction in the PCS civil service union, “PCS Left Unity”, are in a civil war over whose turn it is to stand for Assistant General Secretary when it comes up for election in 2019 (nominations open 17 January, balloting 16 April to 9 May).
Rogue SP member and current lay President of the union Janice Godrich is challenging incumbent SP loyalist Chris Baugh for the nomination. LU holds its final meeting to decide its nomination later in November. Whether the loser will accept the result and not stand against the LU nominee remains to be seen.
Currently we don’t believe there will be a challenge from the right-wing. PCS Independent Left will be nominating John Moloney for the election.
If the loser of the internal Left Unity election decides to enter the election regardless PCS members will be faced with the prospect of voting for three far-left candidates who have similar policies on just about everything except they hate each other.
